Saturday at 1 pm, Lyle Anderson, “University Carillonneur”, performs an Independence Day program on the 56-bell Memorial Carillon at the Carillon Tower. The time coincides with the ringing of bells and carillons nationwide coordinated through "Let Freedom Ring," a Philadelphia-based project that began in 1963. Call 219-5291 for details.

The Madison Area Technical College is looking for mentors and short-term hosts for a group of twenty international students. These students come from developing world countries such as Egypt, Brazil , Costa Rica , El Salvador, Turkey and Indonesia . Their study in Madison is made possible by grant funding. Participants who would like to help show these students what Madison is all about and build connections and friendships with these students from round the world call 243-4556.

Thursday night participants may spend an evening out and learn something about Madison! Every Thursday in July the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation will be offering “Twilight Tours” of distinctive Madison neighborhoods. This week attendees may learn about Madison ’s log cabin beginnings on King Street , one of the city's main streets for over one hundred and fifty years. Thursday evening at 7 pm, Salon Q will meet at the Outreach Center, 600 Williamson Street, in Madison . SalonQ is an inclusive adult social and discussion group organized by OutReach, Madison and south-central Wisconsin 's LGBT Community Center. It is designed as a conversation group for any member of the community looking for a safe and healthy way to meet and get to know new people. Thursday night at 9:30 the Memorial Union Terrace, 800 Langdon Street will present “Hot Summer Nights”. Californian singer-songwriter Jackie Greene will bring his long-developed roots rock blues his performance. “Concerts in the Garden” returns to Olbrich Gardens next week. Participants can enjoy the evening with a concert every Tuesday on the “Great Lawn” of Olbrich's outdoor gardens.
