They believe that, quote “books are tools for learning and can open minds to new ideas and fresh possibilities.” They accept donations of money or books. Sunday, Olbrich Gardens hosts Madison's annual community Kwanzaa celebration featuring Madison's Poet Laureate, Fabu Carter Brisco. Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of the African-American spirit and culture featuring dancing, drumming, and singing, refreshments and a book giveaway by Women in Focus, Inc. This weekend, the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Department of Afro-American Studies and the Campus Women's Center present Ntozake Shange's play “For Colored Girls Who've Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf”. The play is a series of 20 poems expressing the many struggles and obstacles that African-American women face throughout their lives like love, abandonment, rape, and abortion. It's being produced, directed and performed by undergraduates. It will be performed at 7:00 tomorrow and Sunday in the H'Doubler performance space in Lathrop Hall, 1050 University Avenue. It is free and open to the public.

This afternoon, the Pyle Center hosts Anthony Shadid of the New York Times who will talk on The Truths We Tell: Reportingon Faith, War, and the Fate of Iraq”. This is in the Alumni Lounge of the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street, at 4:30.

This evening, the Lucky Mojo Studio hosts a Winter Solstice Lantern Making Workshop. They will show you how to use willow twigs and tissue paper to make lanterns in fanciful shapes. This is at the Lucky Mojo Studio, 2717 Atwood Avenue, from 5:30 to 8:30. Check luckymojostudio.com for more details.

This evening, the Multicultural Student Center, as part of its Social Justice Speakers Series, hosts Raza Educators from Tucson Unified School District on the value of ethnic studies and on their resistance to Arizona H.B. 2281, the anti-ethnic studies ban. As part of their presentation, they will screen clips from “Precious Knowledge,” a documentary film that profiles them and other Raza educators engaged in the struggle for the survival of ethnic studies in Arizona. This is hosted in collaboration with UW College of Letters & Science, Chican and Latin Studies Program, Afro-American Studies, Department of Sociology, and La Follette High School. Tonight, Rush Mor Records in Milwuakee hosts Steven Blush to promote the launch of the Second Edition of his book American Hardcore. The book is a chronicle of the early eighties hard core scene in the United States. The event includes slide show on the rise of the American Hardcore punk scene with an emphasis on underground music subculture in Milwaukee and the Midwest. This is free and open to the public.
