THE HISTORY OF July 2nd. Today in 1917: One of the bloodiest race riots in U.S. history erupts in East Saint Louis, Illinois. White workers, protesting the employment of blacks, kill an estimated two hundred and drive six thousand from their homes.

An eye witness will testify, "The bodies of the dead Negroes were thrown into morgue like so many dead hogs." On July 28, ten thousand New Yorkers will march down Fifth Avenue in a silent parade of protest organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

THIS HISTORY OF JUNE 28th, continuing this week's special series to honor the Stonewall Rebellion anniversary

Today in 1970: Reverend Troy Perry, Carole Shepherd and Kelly Weiser begin a fast at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas, a scene of frequent police harassment of gay men and lesbians. They say they will continue fasting until state officials begin measures to guarantee sexual freedom for consenting adults.

Police arrest the three for "incitement to riot," a charge that will be changed to "obstructing sidewalk traffic." Perry will spend the night in jail without food. He'll leave the next day on his own recognizance to fast and sleep for the next 10 days on the steps of the Federal Building. One July 7th, Perry will break his fast by symbolically breaking bread back at the corner of Hollywood and Las Palmas.

On August 4th, the FBI follows a tip and goes directly to a farm near the town of Philadelphia. Buried in an earthen dam are the bullet-ridden bodies of the missing men. The Neshoba county sheriff and one of his deputies will be among 21 arrested in December in connection with the murder, but all will win release on a technicality.

THIS HISTORY OF JUNE 27th, continuing this week's special series to honor the Stonewall Rebellion anniversary.

Today in 1969: New York City police storm into the Stonewall, a Greenwich Village gay bar. They're expecting a routine raid. But many young men have been emboldened by recent race rebellions and by escalating resistance to the Vietnam War. They feel it's time to take direct action.

In less than an hour, the police harassment at the Stonewall will ignite a full-scale riot. The battle will rage in the surrounding neighborhood for nearly a week. Within a month, organizations will spring up across the country to resist similar oppression and to support the Stonewall rioters. The modern lesbian and gay rights movement has begun.

June 19th - June 25th

THE HISTORY OF June 19th, I'm ___________________ .

And I’m ___________________ . Today IN 1985: A contingent of armed gunmen opens fire on patrons of an outdoor restaurant in a posh district of San Salvador known as the “Zona Rosa”. Thirteen are killed, including four Marine guards assigned to the United States embassy and two United States businessmen.

In a radio broadcast of June twenty-fourth, “Radio Venceremos” will say, "If U.S. Army members and C.I.A. agents died in San Salvador, it was because they came to attack our people. No one had summoned them; they died as a result of the interventionist policy carried out by President Reagan, whose intervention grows day by day. Reagan will have to assume full responsibility for his deeds."

THE HISTORY OF June 20th, I'm___________________ .

And I'm ___________________ . Today in 1893: Eugene Debs forms the American Railway Union. Although the union includes only workers born of white parents, it adopts an industrial strategy in the tradition of the “Knights of Labor”, uniting all railway workers in one great union rather than along craft lines. In just a few months the union will lead an eighteen -day strike against the Great Northern Railroad, forcing management to reverse three wage cuts.

The victory against a railroad with two thousand five hundred miles of track and nine thousand employees will be so remarkable -- especially during a depression -- that the union will sign up two thousand members a day. Within a year, it will grow to one hundred and fifty thousand members, almost as large as Samuel Gompers' American Federation of Labor. This will set the stage for Chicago's Pullman strike in 1894 -- the first organized nationwide strike in United States history.

THE HISTORY OF June 21th, I'm ___________________ .

And I’m ___________________ . Today in 1921: Judy Holliday is born in New York City. A shrewd, intelligent woman, Holliday will make her acting career by playing endearing, scatterbrained blondes in films such as, “Adams Rib” and “Born Yesterday”.

But, in the early 1950’s, Holliday will be called before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee for associating with suspected communists. Realizing the public confuses her with her film persona, Holliday will put on a show for the committee, leading her questioners in circles of illogic and forgetfulness.

Convinced she really is an idiot, the committee will let her go without getting a single piece of usable information from her -- and never realizing they were victims of a masterful joke.

THE HISTORY OF June 22th, I'm ___________________ .

AND I’m ___________________ . Today in 1964: Three civil-rights workers -- African American Mississippian James Chaney and Jewish New Yorkers Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman -- are reportedly arrested for speeding in Neshoba County, Mississippi.

The alleged arrest followed their inspection of an African American church that mysteriously burned down. Local white authorities will report that the trio had been released after their arrest. Searchers will find the burned hulk of their station wagon but, not the young men. After the FBI begins work on the case, some white Mississippi leaders will suggest publicly the disappearance is a hoax.

THE HISTORY OF June 25th, I'm ___________________.

AND I’m ___________________ . Today in 1975: The “Front for the Liberation of Mozambique” frees the nation from five hundred years of Portuguese rule. The new government will espouse the aims of establishing a socialist society and the elimination of white minority regimes in southern Africa.

The country will provide a haven for Zimbabwean nationalist forces despite strong Southern Rhodesian military reprisals. For the next several years, the front will defend the nation’s independence against Jonas Savimbis terrorist forces, sponsored by South Africa and the United States.
