THE HISTORY OF July 2nd. Today in 1917: One of the bloodiest race
riots in U.S. history erupts in East Saint Louis, Illinois. White workers,
protesting the employment of blacks, kill an estimated two hundred and drive
six thousand from their homes.
An eye witness will testify, "The bodies of the dead Negroes were thrown into morgue like so many dead hogs." On July 28, ten thousand New Yorkers will march down Fifth Avenue in a silent parade of protest organized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Josephine Mandamin, along with many caring citizens, will gather for
educational and inspirational activities to honor and appreciate our precious
water resource. The event culminates with a walk around Lake Monona, as
Mandamin has done for all five of our Great Lakes and ends with a feast.
