This weekend and through December 17, Broom Street Theater presents “A Very Bitchy Christmas”. The story is about a Grandpa, who started a family tradition many years ago, telling stories around a Christmas bonfire at his house. But when he dies unexpectedly and Grandma decides she has had enough stories from a family she doesn’t even like it becomes a Christmas like no other. A Madison tradition, the "Holiday Fantasy in Lights" is again lit up. NECA, IBEW 239 and others are sponsoring the display which are light pictures of many different holidays. The Urban Leagueof Greater Madison needs help improving the social economic conditions of African Americans, other communities of color and the disadvantaged. This Friday the Parental Stress Center is training volunteers to answer the Parent Stressline. The Stressline volunteers provide a listening ear to parents when they just need to talk. The Home Chore Volunteer Program is seeking volunteers to help older people by doing household chores, such as yard work, that may be difficult for them, making living at home impossible. Call 223-3100 for details or to volunteer.

The Respite Center is a safe place for kids, ages birth to fourteen,
whose families are under stress or in crisis. They are looking for volunteers to play with kids four hours a week. Training is required. Call 244-5730 for details.

William Taylor is a lawyer, teacher and writer in the fields of civil rights and education.
