THE HISTORY OF September 3rd, I'm ___________________.

And I'm ___________. Today in 1919: the Socialist Party of America, the most successful left party in U.S. history, splits to form the Communist Party of America and many smaller groups. The party dissolved amid widespread governmental attacks and the formation of the Communist International.

The party membership numbers peaked in 1912 with more than one hundred thousand members organized into some five thousand locals. That year, eight hundred ninety seven thousand people - six percent of the presidential vote - cast their ballots for labor leader Eugene V. Debs. Socialist Party publications have included three hundred and twenty three English and foreign-language periodicals.

THE HISTORY OF August 31st, I'm ___________________ .

And I’m ___________. Today in 1929: The Trade Union Unity League is founded when 690 delegates from 18 states cut the cord with the conservative American Federation of Labor, which still organizes along craft lines. An arm of the Communist Party, the league will push for unionizing workers along industrial lines, and will lead struggles of miners, textile workers and farm workers.

At its peak, the league will have 125,000 members. In 1930, it will lead almost a million jobless workers in a dozen cities to demand relief and unemployment insurance. The league will dissolve before the great organizing drives of the Congress of Industrial Organizations in the late 1930's.

THE HISTORY OF August 30th, I'm ___________________ .

And I’m ___________. Today in 1819: The Kickapoo cede their territory, which spans central Illinois, and move to Missouri. In 1670, the Kickapoo lived in what would become Wisconsin. They moved to Illinois and Indiana in 1765.

The nation gave up some 3 million acres in 1809, when Indians territorial governor, William Henry Harrison, bribed and intimidated the older and more moderate tribal leaders. The Kickapoo aided the British in the War of 1812 and, in 1832, some will join Black Hawk in the Sauk war against the United States.

Continually pushed by white settlers, the Kickapoo will move again from Missouri to Kansas. In 1852, they will be forced to Texas. Then some will move to Mexico while others will move to an Oklahoma reservation.
