The recall elections for State Senators are August 9th and August 16th. These elections are a crucial first step toward reclaiming the Wisconsin we know and love, and we need your help to ensure the integrity of these vital elections. You can do this by volunteering as a poll watcher with the Election Defense Alliance. Training is provided and you are not required to live in the district to become a poll watcher. Know a local teenager than needs some artistic release? Paste Up! – Street Art Camp for Teens looking for 8-12 kids in the Madison area to fill the camp. Also, if you happen to own a building on Madison’s Eastside, we’re looking for places to install the student’s temporary artwork. The 48 Hour Film Project, an international filmmaking competition held in over 90 cities worldwide, announces its fifth annual Madison, Wis. competition. The 48 Hour Film Project-Madison is a wild and sleepless weekend in which teams compete to create a short film from scratch — writing, shooting, editing and scoring original music — and be named Madison’s Best 48 Hour Film. All films will be premiered at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 21 at the Orpheum Theatre located at 216 State St. The screening is open to the public. The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week. This weekend, 300 filmmakers from Madison are making films in the 48 Hour Film Project! Tonight there will be screening of the new documentary Brian & Co Parliament Square SW1 about UK peace campaigner, Brian Haw, who sadly passed away on June 18th in a hospital in Germany after a long battle with lung cancer. Brian Haw’s demonstration for peace at London’s Parliament Square started in June 2001 and thus predates the September 11th attacks and the US led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The screening will be followed by testimonials by people lucky enough to have met Brian. Donations will be accepted for Japan Earthquake Relief per the request of the director of the film. The Alliance for Animals presents One Lucky Elephant: A Ten Thousand Pound Love Story,  a highly acclaimed documentary.  The evening includes the film, food from Bunky’s Café.  Appetizers served at 6:30 and the movie will begin at 7:30 p.m.   There is a cost to this event.  It is taking place at the East Side Club, 3735 Monona Drive in Monona. On July 9th Red Caboose Day Care Center invites you to participate in the 1st Annual Move Your Caboose 5K Run/Walk. Wisconsin native and Nashville country musician Maggie Mae will perform with Heartland Country in a benefit concert for the Badger Honor Flight to raise funds for taking World War II veterans for a day trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the WWII memorial. The annual Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF) this summer will explore the fusion of cultures and music in the New World during the Renaissance and Baroque eras with a series of public concerts and workshops presented by some of the brightest stars of the Early Music world. The recall elections for State Senators are July 12th, July 19th, August 9th and August 16th.  These elections are a crucial first step toward reclaiming the Wisconsin we know and love, and we need your help to ensure the integrity of these vital elections. This evening the “Committee for Justice in the Middle East “(or, CJME) hosts a screening and discussion of the film “La Terre Parle Arabe: The Land Speaks Arabic” about the Zionist expulsion of the indigenous Arab population from Palestine during the 1948 War. “Evening Meals on Wheels” needs volunteers to deliver hot, nutritious low-cost meals to older and differently abled people. Locations are flexible and the time commitment is about one hour per shift. For details call 276-7598.
 
Low cost spayings and neuterings for dogs and cats are available through the Dane County Humane Society and Maddie’s Fund. There are various times and prices and they include an FVRCP vaccine. Dane County “Friends of Ferals” is seeking rural outdoor homes for altered feral and semi-feral cats. This will avoid euthanasias. They and the Dane County Humane Society relocate them on farms. They occupy feral cat territory but don’t breed. They are all tested, vaccinated, dewormed and fixed. For details call 467-4067.
