THE
HISTORY OF August 10th, I'm ___________________ .
AND I'm ___________.
Today in 1988: After 40 years of sweeping a brutal chapter of U.S. history
under the carpet, President Bush is pressured to sign a law compensating
victims of U.S. internment camps, where more than 100,000 Japanese Americans on
the West coast were held during World War Two.
In February 1942,
President Franklin Roosevelt had authorized the internment, and Japanese
Americans were imprisoned in remote desert areas. Hawaii’s 150,000 Japanese
Americans were spared internment when the business community, media, local
governments and general population rushed to their support.
But Japanese Americans
on the mainland were isolated. White farmers viewed them as competitors and
openly admitted they wanted their land. The Los Angeles Times questioned their
loyalty and, echoed by local radio, branded them potential spies.
