THE HISTORY OF
July 27th, I'm ___________________ .
And
I’m ___________________ . Today in 1919: Eugene Williams, a young Chicago African
American, crosses an unseen color line at the twenty ninth Street Beach on Lake
Michigan. Whites stone Williams until he drowns and nearby police refuse to
make any arrests. This quickly leads to fighting between white and blacks that
spreads across Chicago. White gangs stab and shoot African Americans who stray
into white districts.
Tomorrow, mobs will begin dragging blacks from streetcars to beat them. On the worst night, police will join rioters in riding through black districts and taking shots. The six-day rebellion will leave thirty eight people dead, five hundred thirty seven injured, and more than one thousand homes destroyed.
