THE
HISTORY OF July 19th, I'm ___________________ .
And I'm ___________________ . Today in 1881: Oglala Sioux chief,
Sitting Bull and his few remaining followers cross the Canadian border and
surrender to the U.S. Army at Fort Buford, North Dakota. Before their exile in
Canada, the Sioux band numbered more than 3,000 but, after four years in
Saskatchewan, death and defections have reduced them to 186.
The United States saw a free Sitting Bull as a dangerous symbol of subversion, so the government pressured the Canadians to treat the starving Sioux as troublemakers. The Canadians refused any assistance and assigned Mounted Police to watch them.
Leading his followers back to the United States today, Sitting
Bull is counting on a promise that he will receive a pardon and be sent to the
Standing Rock reservation. But the U.S. Army will hold him prisoner at Fort
Randall.
