Today on "A Public Affair", Allen Ruff hosts Middle East historian Joel Beinen, former head of the Middle East Studies Associationand specialist on the Egyptian workers' movement. He returned not long ago from two years in Cairo. They will discuss recent developments across the Middle East, the popular movements' successes and the problems they face. This is on WORT at noon. This afternoon, the the General Library System and the Department of English Funding Courtesy of the Anonymous Fund host Carla Harryman Assistant Professor, Creative Writing Program Eastern Michigan University. This evening, Constance Steinkuehler, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and expert on virtual worlds, moderates a panel entitled “From Texting to Twitter: Digital Media Across Generations”. The panel includes Gary Sandefur, Dean of Letters and Science; Aaron Brower, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning; Sara McKinnon, Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication Arts; Gemma Wilson, UW undergraduate; and Matt Wisniewski, creator of a viral video about the recent protests at the Capitol. Tonight is the 2nd I.W.U. Fundraising Banquet. The event features Peruvian Buffet by Chef Maritza Paz, Live Music including Son Mudanza and African Singer Edi Gbordzi, a silent auction and raffle prizes. Keynote speaker is Leone Jose Bicchieri, who has almost 20 years experience organizing Latino and other immigrant workers. He is the executive director of the Chicago Workers Collaborative, a worker center which organizes low-wage workers to understand and fight for their rights. There is a ticket charge.
