This evening Madison Public Library’s South Madison branch hosts a free knitting workshop. Attendees may learn to knit or bring their current project to work on. Some loaner supplies available for beginning knitting. This is in 2222 South Park Street at 6:00. Call 266-6395 for details.

This evening Physician’s for Social Responsibility host “Lanterns for Peace.” It is to remember the anniversary of the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan by the United States. The observance will reflect on visions of a peaceful world. Participants will use art supplies to make paper lanterns to float and write letters and petitions to Congress. This evening “Bankster USA” and others host Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor Simon Johnson discussing "The Financial Crisis: Where We've Been and Where We Need to Go." He is the editor of “Baseline Scenario”, the most respected blog on the financial crisis. This is in the Overture Center’s Capitol Theater, 201 State Street at 7:00. Call 265-0575 for details.

This evening on WORT’s Access Hour the hosts play “Mercury live with heavy liquid metal tunes in the studio.” This is at 7:00. Call 256-2001 for details.

The Wheelchair Recycling Program offers low cost, refurbished mobility and medical equipment to people that may not have the resources to obtain them new. This can include wheelchairs, walkers, bath items, grab bars and other assistive equipment for purchase. There are offices in Madison and the Greater-Milwaukee area. Project Home is seeking volunteers to help low income, elderly and differently-abled people whose homes need protection from the elements. Painting day is in mid-August. Call 246-3737 for details.
