THE
HISTORY OF August 21st, I'm ___________________ .
And I’m ___________. Today in 1680: the Spanish survivors of the
Pueblo Indian revolt abandon Santa Fe and flee to El Paso, leaving to native
peoples an area that will become known as New Mexico. The Pueblos revolted
against the Spanish occupiers on August tenth, killing four hundred - including
twenty-one missionary priests.
The Pueblos will remain independent of the Spaniards for twelve years. In 1692, however, Diego de Vargas will recapture the territory and destroy nearly all the Pueblo villages. The only known town to survive the Spaniard's wrath will be Acoma, which was established in the twelfth century. Acoma will become the oldest continuously inhabited United States community.
