THE
HISTORY OF July 3rd, I'm ___________________ .
And I’m ___________________. Today in 1989: the United States
Supreme Court, in Webster versus Reproductive Health Services, allows states to
restrict access to abortion. The case involved a
Missouri statute that banned the use of public funds or public utilities to
perform abortions except to save a woman's life. In addition, the preamble to
the law states that life begins at conception.
The decision will intensify legislative battles across the nation over control of women's bodies. Anti-abortion warriors have not only used legal means to obstruct a woman's right to an abortion. At their instigation, between 1977 and 1989, seventy-seven family-planning clinics have been torched or bombed. Clinic employees have been beaten, taken hostage and killed.
