The Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice along with Physicians for Social Responsibility will be hosting 'Lanterns for Peace, commemorating the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings'. This event has something for the whole family - lantern making and floating on the lake, singing and speakers. The CSA is hosting a 'Cooking it All: Menu Planning & Cooking Techniques' workshop showing how to preserve and prepare seasonal favorites. Omulu Guanabara Capoeira will host a family-friendly fundraiser - the Brazilian Spectacular - at the Goodman Community Center (149 Waubesa St.) on Sunday August 7, 2011. There will be a DJ and a raffle and all funds raised from the Brazilian Spectacular will go towards hosting a Batizado here in Madison. Doors open at 2:30PM and the entertainment will run 3-5PM. There is a suggested donation for this event.

Wisconsin Books to Prisoners needs BOOKS for the antiquated condition of prison libraries and for deficiencies in educational programs for prisoners. By sending books to those in prison, WBTP fosters a love of reading and supports the pursuit of knowledge and self-education. There are several drop off locations and a pick-up for large quantities. The Parental Stress line helps prevent child abuse by connecting parents who are stressed or feeling alone with volunteers who talk with them by phone. Training is necessary. Call 241-4888 extension 26 for details.

The Respite Center is a safe place for kids, ages birth to fourteen, whose families are under stress or in crisis. They are looking for volunteers to play with kids four hours a week. Training is required. Call 244-5730 for details.
