THE
HISTORY OF September 6th, I'm ___________________ .
And I’m _________________. Today in 1993: Slovak Prime Minister
Vladimir Meciar says Gypsies constitute a (quote) “socially unadaptable
population with” (quote) "children, simply, who are a great burden on this
society" endquote. Many of the Gypsies economic and social protections in
Hungary, Romania and Czechoslovakia have gone the way of communism.
Gypsies, who call themselves the Roma, are suffering a revival of persecution marring their history in Europe since they migrated from Hindu India in the eleventh century. Jozef Pacai, mayor of the Czech city, Medzev, has suggested that the only solution is selectively killing Gypsies.

today’s Action Calendar!
Today
from 4 to 6pm there is a Dane County Timebank Builders Workshop entitled “Creating
Abundance in a Challenged Economy!” Builders’ Workshops are a
learning and leadership-building journey hosted by the Dane County TimeBank, a
local mutual credit time exchange. Today’s session is about finding and
recognizing the abundant value in our community. The cost to attend is whatever
you can contribute: time, money, work or other gift of your
choosing. This is at 1 South Pinckney, in the conference room just
up the steps from the first floor lobby. More info at danecountytimebank.org.
Also
today, from 4:30 to 6pm there will be a Picket in Support of Bradley Manning.
All are welcome with signs to join in this protest - being held with similar
events across the nation, at other Obama campaign offices, during the
Democratic National Convention. This is a protest of the administration and
military's policy of extreme punishment for whistle-blowing. For more on
Manning’s case, visit bradleymanning.org. This Picket is being
organized by Madison Area Peace Coalition, VFP, Madison Pledge of Resistance,
Peregrine Forum and other WNPJ member groups. This will be held in front of the
Obama Campaign office, 222 State Street. For more info, email joyfirst5@gmail.com.
Tonight, there
is a free public lecture at the UW Arboretum. Stacy Rosenbaum will speak on
“Using Research to Conserve Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas,” about the use of
research in conservation at the Karisoke Research Center in northwest Rwanda.
Rosenbaum is a PhD candidate in biological anthropology at the University of
California-Los Angeles. She has spent three years in Rwanda’s forests studying
