THE HISTORY OF September 4, I'm ___________________ .

And I’m ___________. Today in 1886: Chiricahua Apache Chief Goyathlay, known to whites as “Geronimo”, surrenders to Arizona Territory forces for the last time. President Grover Cleveland, who believes lurid newspaper tales of “Geronimo's” evil deeds, will recommend his hanging.

“Geronimo” and his surviving warriors will be shipped to Fort Marion, Florida, to join other Apache internees. He finds most of his friends dying in the warm, humid land which is very unlike the high, dry country of the Southwest.

More than one hundred will die of consumption. The government will send their children to the Indian school at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where more than fifty will die. Geronimo will die in 1909, still a prisoner of war. The Chiricahuas were marked for extinction because they fought too hard for freedom.
